POLLED NELORE

The Polled Nelore is a naturally hornless variety of the Nelore breed, which originated from the Ongole cattle of India. While traditional Nelore cattle have small horns, selective breeding has developed a polled strain that maintains all the desirable characteristics of the breed while eliminating the need for dehorning.

Polled Nelore share the same hardiness, adaptability, and efficiency as their horned counterparts. They are highly resistant to heat, parasites, and diseases, making them one of the most sought-after beef cattle in Brazil and other tropical regions. Their short, sleek coat, dark skin, and ability to thrive on poor-quality forage allow them to excel in hot climates where other breeds struggle.

Brazil is the global leader in Nelore cattle production, with the Polled Nelore gaining popularity due to the growing demand for naturally hornless animals. The absence of horns reduces handling difficulties, minimizes injuries in feedlots, and improves overall herd management.

Like the horned Nelore, the Polled Nelore has a distinctive hump over its shoulders, long legs, and a well-muscled frame suited for beef production. Their reproductive efficiency is exceptional, with cows exhibiting strong maternal instincts and high fertility rates. These traits have made them a dominant breed in Brazilian beef production, where over 80% of the national herd consists of Nelore cattle, including a significant number of polled individuals.

Selective breeding programs continue to refine the Polled Nelore, ensuring that it retains its hardiness while enhancing meat quality, growth rates, and adaptability to modern beef production systems. The demand for polled genetics is increasing, making Polled Nelore a valuable asset in global cattle breeding.
